Welcome.
The purpose of this website is twofold.
First, to pay tribute to "Bridge to Terabithia", which is one of the most powerful and moving stories written in recent times. Inspired by true events, it is an honest tale of dealing with the harsh realities of life at an early age. In the 34 years since it was published, it has been widely recognized as a book of extrordinary quality--high praise for a work of juvenile fiction. It is studied in English and Literature classes in at least six different countries.
However, despite its simple style and heartfelt message (or perhaps because of it), it has also been the frequent target of protests and censors. Therefore, the remainder of the site is dedicated to the concept of censorship of literature in America:
* It's origins and motivations, including historical and recent examples,
* Effects on different groups as well as society as a whole,
* Groups that both advocate and oppose censorship,
* Use of censorship in a culture to suppress minority groups within it.
It is hoped that the information presented in these pages will not only bring the pleasure of discovery, but also allow you to grasp the reasons behind attempts by some to deny the gift of knowledge to others; the intention is to help keep the flame of understanding alight for future generations.
Read, enjoy, spread the word, and thank you for visiting.
